Levers or Door Knobs – Which One to Choose
When choosing the hardware for your doors, there are two main options. Both door knobs and levers offer various advantages which mean that it comes down to your personal needs, preferences, and style. Here are some important points to remember when making this choice and understanding the pros and cons of each option.
Door knobs
A door knob is great for adding style and character to any room. There are plenty of excellent designs from which to choose which means that it’s easy to find a suitable match for your home. In fact, you may find several suitable designs from which to choose! Some of the advantages of choosing door knobs include:
• Doorknobs can be fitted with latches that operate by turning the knob in either direction.
• Doorknobs have been around much longer than door handles. So, if you have a period home or you want to create this kind of theme, then knobs are the way to go.
• The style of doorknobs is not limited to the round shape. There are also oval options which offer added style and better grip. There are also a number of different sizes from which to choose.
Some disadvantages of doorknobs include:
• Doorknobs do not offer as much grip as a door handle due to the shape. This can make things tricky for children and the elderly. Public buildings are also best fitted with levers rather than knobs since you need to cater to a wide variety of people’s needs.
• Knobs will need to be set into the door in order prevent the user from knocking their hands on the door frame as they turn the knob.
• If security is your concern, knobs can prove tricky. They don’t offer as many high-security options as levers.
With all of these pros and cons in mind, here are the advantages of choosing door levers:
• Door levers are much easier to use than knobs. Simply because you don’t need to have the perfect grip or dexterity to use them. So they are perfect for those who have trouble gripping door knobs like the elderly, children, and anyone with any kind of medical condition that inhibits the use of their hands.
• If you have a door that will not accommodate a lock with a deep case, then levers are the way to go. You will never need to worry about knocking your knuckles no matter which lever you choose.
• There are a wide variety of sizes, styles, and colors. You can even choose from a number of backplates that will prove styles and functional. These backplates can accommodate things like keyholes so that you can opt for an all-in-one option rather than buying everything separately.
Some disadvantages of levers include:
• No matter how simple or old-fashioned the style of the lever, it will never match the authenticity of a door knob in a period home or building. If you are only worried about style, then you should choose levers for modern styles and knobs for an older theme.
• If you have ever rushed passed a door only to feel a strong tug, then you know just how frustrating it can be when your clothing hooks on the lever. This is something that can only be avoided if you install knobs instead or exercise caution every single time you walk through the doorway.
• Levers contain springs and other small parts that will require maintenance from time to time whereas door knobs require far less maintenance.
